/ not just lines and color

We get it. Sometimes you just stand in front of abstract art and ask: "What am I looking at?" We're here with you. Though some of these pieces mold shapes and different colors into forms that might not make the most sense, the artists and our community intend to solicit reactions from viewers and the community at large. Each of these artists draw their inspiration from different artistic movements, different times in history and different lived experiences. Even though you not be used to approaching art like this, don’t worry. There’s no correct way to digest the works in this exhibition. We ask not for you to synthesize something grand about the works you see, but rather explore the feelings and thoughts that the works evoke in you and get one step closer to understanding why they aren't just lines, shapes and colors with no reason.

/ a brief primer

Why even look at the swiggles and lines? Watch a quick video from PBS about the significance of abstraction.

Watch actor and comedian Steve Martin slowly dissect and closely look at two abstract pieces.
